When Should You Take Your Baby to a Walk-in Clinic?
Fever, rash, cough, feeding issues — a pediatric-friendly guide for new parents on when a walk-in visit makes sense and when to head to the ER.
New parents get a lot of advice. Most of it contradicts itself, and almost none of it helps when it's 2 a.m. and your baby has a fever. So here's a simple guide: when should you take your baby to a walk-in clinic, when can you wait, and when do you need to go straight to the ER?
Go to the emergency room immediately if
- Your baby is under 3 months old and has a fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher — this is an ER visit, not a walk-in visit, every time
- Difficulty breathing, blue lips, or unusual grunting
- A seizure, even a brief one
- Not waking for feeds or unusually limp
- A rash that doesn't fade when you press on it
- Persistent vomiting with no wet diapers for 8+ hours
A walk-in clinic is usually fine for
- A fever in a baby older than 3 months who is otherwise alert
- A cold that's lingered more than a week
- A rash that's slowly spreading but not severe
- Diaper rash that isn't healing with cream
- Diarrhea without signs of dehydration
- Mild wheezing without respiratory distress
- Questions about feeding, sleep or growth
What to bring
- Your baby's health card
- The diaper bag (obviously)
- A note of their feeding schedule for the last 24 hours — how many feeds, how many wet diapers
- Any medications you've given, with the time and dose
- The baby's immunization record if you have it
Questions to ask the doctor
Parents often freeze in the exam room and forget to ask everything they wanted. Write these down before you go:
- What should I watch for at home that would mean I need to come back?
- How long should this last?
- When can I give medication, and what dose is right for their weight?
- Is this something that needs a follow-up?
Having a family doctor makes all of this easier
Walk-in clinics are great in a pinch, but babies benefit enormously from a family physician who knows them over time — who tracks growth curves, development, and immunizations, and who you can call when you're not sure. If you're in Burlington and looking for a family doctor accepting new pediatric patients, Palladium Medical Center is enrolling families now ahead of our June opening.
